Macy's Union Square, the jewel of the West Coast, is located in the heart of the shopping district and encompasses an entire city block! A magnificent selection of the hottest season's fashions, world-class events, top-notch services, and gourmet restaurants are all part of the mystique of this incredible store. For your convenience, Macy's Union Square offers a full range of free services including Bag/Coat Check and resting lounge at our Visitor Center (6th floor), Wedding Registry consultants (6th floor and Cellar/Lower Level), and Macy's By Appointment, a free personal shopping service (3rd floor).
The department store concept was pioneered in the West in 1866 by O'Connor, Moffat, & Co. The Union Square San Francisco location was commissioned in 1928 and converted to a Macy's in 1947. Macy's followed up with a major expansion of the store the following year, using the original architect of the 1928 building, Louis Parson Hobart. In the late 1990s, Macy's began a multi-year project to rehabilitate its landmark downtown store. The project encompassed the remodeling of the 1928 and 1947 buildings as well as the 1974 stand-alone Men's Store and expansion into the upper floors of the former I. Magnin store built in 1946. The company also replaced two out-of-date buildings on Geary Street, giving the store its signature glass-fronted entry on Union Square.
